"Malacca Site Study Trip"

Date: 3 October 2011 (Monday) - 4 October 2011 (Tuesday)

3 October 2011. It was a relaxing morning for us, with no lectures, no tutorials. Every student has to be in KBU foyer before 8.30am and we departed from KBU around 9am. During this Malacca site study trip we will be staying in Fenix Inn for 2 days 1. It has been a long time for us to have a trip like this with all the classmates.

Malacca Site Study trip is under one of the module, which is Advanced Design Studies for year 3 students. The module enables students to explore a subject of interest in depth both visually and through text based medium. The module is led student through a series of design research projects giving opportunities to integrate research, synthesis and evaluation of particular design issue within a specific context. Therefore, Site visit study is the beginning stage of year 3 student's final year project.

The aim for the Malacca site study trip is to strengthen the network with other cities and increase the knowledge and understanding of the cities through the site survey and analysis which will done by students and learning from one another. Our Class trip included site visit, site survey, site analysis, site auditing and observation.

Malacca is a historical and beautiful city in Malaysia. Malacca is about 150 kilometer south of Kuala Lumpur. Across the North-South expressway you will be within two hours in Malacca.

Malacca was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2008. Within Malacca Town, the World Heritage Site comprises a 38.62 hectare core zone and a 134.03 hectare buffer zone.

The core zone of the Historic City of Melaka, as mapped out by the nomination file submitted to UNESCO, comprises two sections bisected by the Malacca River. They form the oldest part of Malacca. Therefore, if students selected the site which are located inside the core zone, students are not allow changing or redesigning the facade of the existing building.

Deepavali Celebration | Kolam @ 1 Utama

Deepavali, The Festival of Lights is celebrated by Hindus throughout the world especially in Malaysia. During Deepavali, the entrance of Hindu homes is decorated with kolam (Indian floor art), it is not only as an aesthetic decorative form but also for the belief that the Goddess of abundance and manifest beauty; Lakshmi, will bestow her blessings upon its many inmates and the people who pass them by.

Kolam is an auspicious art of decorating courtyards and pooja rooms/prayer halls in South India drawn mainly by women and girls. Some women use rice flour to draw a kolam, which is the traditional medium to be used while others use sandstone or limestone powder.

Title: "Dance of Light"

Rangolis and Kolams are designed by the ladies of a household as sacred welcoming areas for the deities during this festive season. It’s a beautiful tradition that has been past down from generation to generation.This rangolis/kolam depicts the celebration starting from a simple diyas.

From its light, a beautiful girl dances to show their joy and happiness. Soon a magnificent peacock joins in with the rhythms of the music in a dance that symbolizes their faith in its highest glory.

Title: "The Light of Love, Harmony and Wisdom"

Inspired by the harmonious kolam designs, the students and lecturers at KBU School of Design choose to design a peacock with its colourful feathers spread out while it looks shyly as it warmly welcomes visitors to 1 Utama Shopping Centre to share the festive occasion of Deepavali. The peacock’s feathers symbolize good luck and health.

May our humble peacock bring light, love and harmony to all shoppers at 1 Utama.

Wow! What a first day!

After the holiday breaks, students are going back to college with full of excitement.

Before the academic year began, KBU has always organizing an orientation event for students of Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3. Students are to work together to complete the task of the Crazy Week the task of the Crazy Week. What is Crazy Week? Crazy Week is as part of the introductory or warming up project in the beginning of the academic year.

The aims for the Crazy Week are to demonstrate the creativity in two - and three dimensional exploration, consideration of structure, construction, materials and finishes, demonstrate on the green issues and also demonstrate effective of teamwork.

The theme for this year is Vertical Garden. The vertical Garden is also referred as a living wall, green wall or even bio walls. This is usually part of a building or interior spaces and consists of some sort of vegetation. These vertical gardens can be quite spectacular in appearance, and in some cases, they even work to filter clean air into the building or interior spaces in which they are growing upon.

Students are divided into five groups to complete the proposal of their "Vertical Garden" in innovative ways using multimedia presentation, short movie/commercial break and installation in 3 weeks time.

Sequence '11

Sequence '11 is a Graduation Showcase of final year students' work for the BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Design and BA (Hons) Graphic Design programmes of Nottingham Trent University, UK, franchised to and conducted at the School of Design, KBU International College.

This year, Sequence will take you on an exploration of the concept of geometry. Geometry is universal, structured and modular. Using only the basic shapes, we are able to create an almost infinite permutation of patterns, designs and structures. This means that there are endless innovative possibilities in our design, as long as we endeavor to keep discovering them.

World Interiors Day Students at KBU International College

Probably the next wave of one of the most crucial dates to be marked down on the calendar by the interior designers and architects is the recognized World Interiors Day. This global event is honorably marked down by the International Federation of Interior Architect/ Designers (IFI) on the last weekend of May each year.

World Interiors Day (WID) is an annual global event, spearheaded by IFI, and designed to bring Interior Architecture/Design into the spotlight. WID draws the attention of the public; enhances knowledge and understanding of the discipline; encourages cooperation between professionals; and showcases their contribution to the betterment of society.

Being fresh and excited to bring World Interiors Day to the celebration, KBU International College School of Design is proud to take charge of volunteering to organize an event specifically to the design students before they are off to their summer break. Hosted by Interior Architecture and Design Club of KBU International College (KBUIAD) on 31 May 2011, the event was leaded by President Joan Khor alongside with 12 committees with additional few others second year students and guided by few lecturers in-charge. The number of attendees were approximately 200 students with teams and volunteers from each respective batch of degree and diploma.

The highlights of the day is as below
1.    Opening ceremony (Welcome speech by the president of Malaysia Society of Interior Design (MSID), Mr. Mohammad Faizal Ghazali) and momento giving by Ms. Tan Sin Ai.
2.    Experience Sharing by international students, past/graduated students and Thinklab representative, Muhammad Razif Nasruddin.
3.    Design Talk by Dicky Ong and Ms. Min Law (representative from Bristol)
4.    Amazing race competition
5.    Installation of furniture and lighting
6.    Drama and Talent Show

The most anticipated day kicked start as early as 930 a.m on the Tuesday morning with registration procedure and opening ceremony. Not to forget to express the biggest appreciation to the President of MSID for his inspiring speech followed by supportive kick start encouragement from Ms. Tan Sin Ai.

The first two speakers of the experience sharing agenda of that particular morning bliss were given by two of the final year international student Marwa and Sharzad from Iran. This followed by experience sharing from a special guest, the founder of Thinklab Muhammad Razif Nasruddin who is too a former lecturer of KBU International College. Mr. Razif highlighted the importance of designers of generation nowadays by relating to the social and cultural diversities and his purpose to uphold Thinklab, a research based design conference association. Last but not least, this followed by another informative sharing from a graduated student, Ng Foong Wai of her speech about her past and current working experiences, directions and challenges along way after graduated with the first class honours from KBU International College with recognition from twinning university of Nottingham Trend, United Kingdom.

The morning speeches were carried on by a design talk by Mr. Dicky Ong and Ms. Min Law the representative from Bristol. Appreciation too was addressed to Bristol of being supportive by organizing and sponsoring a furniture competition with attractive prizes to be grabbed. This indeed has given a huge opportunity and platform to students to show off their creativity and innovation ideas to manipulate office furniture to a better living.

After the long morning of talks and speeches, the event hyped up with outdoor activities; the amazing race. Inspired by popular reality television series, amazing race consisted of 9 stations marked down all around Bandar Utama. In total of 6 teams with 5 members in each team took part in this race. The race was nerve-wreaking and challenging as each group would need to battle against other groups within the given time frame with task to be accomplished in each station. Whilst the must have furniture/lighting installation was participated by 3 teams who had fun boasting off their creativity and bringing new design approach for being green.

Towards the end of the afternoon, students were once again gathered in the lecture hall for the talent and performance agenda before the result announcement of the category. The performances were indeed stunning and entertaining. It started off with musical instrument performance striding through the entire hall with ascertain of relaxing and chilling late afternoon. Additionally, the next two groups presented their talent through singing and acting. The last performance was a drama and stage performance from the final year students. Indeed the hilarious acting and voice mimicking were entertaining and never fail to crack off all the audiences with big loud of applause.

To sum up the day, results of each competition were announced. Prizes were given out and that has made the whole World Interiors Day to its utmost success.

Design Bazaar 2011

We would never forget the thrill behind a year ago's car-boots sale. It was the excitement of building and painting the stall, preparing food, handicrafts and artsie-fatsie stuff to awe the public that motivated us to do better in the future! This year, the School of Design was pleased to organize another Design Bazaar in conjunction with a month long project, the Design Month. Unlike last year, this year's Design Bazaar was by the theme of tent.

Spot how creatively painted the tents are? These tents narrate how joyous the bunch of the designers to paint their respective tent before the bazaar officially kicks start.

We were equally excited because this year, Design Bazaar offered lots of new surprises to make the two days in duration of Design Bazaar a well celebrated event. Food and drink stalls are few must-have galore. Spotted the scrumptious burger, bubble tea and icy frenzy ice lemon tea immediately melted the scorching day off.

Aside from that, we too were pleased to have few other vendors like Nestle and some other supportive people for their contribution to make the bazaar bigger and much more exciting. While the IAD final year students creatively came out with the idea to cosplay in total of eight famous characters in order to raise fund. Indeed they never failed to stop hundreds of eyes darted to them throughout the afternoon.

Alright, cut the story short. Let the pictures tell the story!

As Design Bazaar grows tremendously every year, we wish that each year we would be able to find fresh ways to evolve the festival experience as surprising, anticipating and exciting as their first time!

5Belas by MSID @ Taylor Lakeside Campus

Good day people. What more again? Malaysia Society of Interior Designer (MSID ) is back with annually celebrated Interior Design Students' Saturday. This year MSID hits the 15th time of uniting all young designers with healthy competitions and challenges. Coincidentally, there were fifteen participating colleges and universities! This year's students' Saturday is themed with the concept, BIOSPHERE

The BIOSPHERE is the global sum of all ecosystems. It can also be called the zone of life on Earth. The BIOSPHERE is the global ecological system integrating all living beings and their relationships, including their interaction with the elements of lithosphere (land), hydrosphere (water) and atmosphere (air).

A very anticipating design carnival, 5Belas was held at Taylor's Lakeside Campus!

It has been absolutely fantabulous! Right fellow participants? Trust me, we are proud to grab in total nine awards back to the college. Remember the humongous cheers, screams, dances and joys?

The day started off with registration of participants and delegates. Each college was allocated to their own respective studio. Finally the day officially begun with the previews of short movie and montage.

Assigned with lots of tasks to be accomplished, KBUIAD students were divided into few groups.

1. Short Movie
Aim to educate, this short movie is solely to project what would happen to our world if one day God has taken away electricity, food, water, and all the crucial living elements. At the end of the movie, it illustrates how beautiful our earth is.

2. Montage.
Blissful! The best word to describe this montage design. The colours are to represent the multi-culture and races of the people. From monotone turning into a colourful scene, it brings out the message of without colours, the world wouldn't be wonderful. Watch the montage video HERE

3. Videologue

Shooting and editing a movie within a short time-frame isn't easy. This team has been tremendously awesome to complete this movie on the spot! This team of four handsome came out with a stick man character who travels around the campus. Discovered wasted objects, pick up and recycle! Say brilliant! Awarded second place in videologue competition!

4. Amazing Race

What would you think by looking at the pictures above? A big applause to this group! Of course in this racing competition, they were needed to run faster to accomplish each of the given task- Unlock the padlock, swallow gross pickles, archery and so on. That's the designers spirit!

5. Art Installation

Installation group built this mega-structure within the given boundary 24 X 9 X 15 meter. Perfectly inspired, it is built with thousands of recycled soft form boards glued together with cans and translucent coloured plastics. In addition, box boards are used as the platform added with transparent plastic bottle forming bubbles structure.
BRAVO installation group! They have proudly won the third place.

6. Furniture Design

Moving on to the furniture design, this piece of furniture comes with multi-purpose in function. To be exact, five functions! It could be assembled to chair, stools, coffee table and console table. It is absolutely environmental friendly constructed with corrugated boards, ropes, egg shelves, sponges, and leathers. Most impressively no nails are used!

Congratulations again! A masterpiece worth to be awarded as the First Place in furniture category!

7. Mural Painting

Ahh yes.. organized by Nippon Paint, a group of approximately four to five person had to come out with a painting best describes the theme of Biosphere. Sweetly done, this piece is intended to show the contrast between organic and geometric. Entries from other colleges you may browse in the Nippon Paint Facebook Page. HERE

8. Lighting

Conceptualized by the concept of hope, this lighting is assembled with black bottles. The main intention of the usage of black is to show contrast between darkness and brightness. Very well collaborated, lighting spreads from the center to portray hopes in humankind and to lead themselves to the future. Another proud piece of art, awarded third place in the lighting category.

9. Fashion Show

KBU GOT TALENT!
Who says no? We have three beautiful models to sashay with pride that afternoon. As the requirement is to design costumes with recycled materials, they manipulated the black trash plastic, newspaper, papers, and the food covers!

Furthermore, yes.. we are in other hand so impressed by other excellent works from other competitors as well.

We have spartan, lots of princesses, diver mutated with sea creatures, jungle princess and so the list goes on. Simply very entertaining fashion show!

10. Performance

Thank goodness we have performances before the night ended. After a tiring whole day long, finally everyone could sit back, relax and enjoy the final performances from each college/university. For KBU college, their performance superbly shook the whole hall with laughter and cheers. Thumbs Up Guys! What again? ..."And the champion goes to KBU International College!"

Very proud, this marks the fourth year of winning in performance category. Keep it up guys! Make sure you still maintain this glory in the coming following years. We have faith in you! :)

That's not all! In the interior design category, we won three awards! Heartiest congratulations to Ken Lam for the second place in the commercial design, Alvin Kwang third place for Institutional Design and Tiong Ing Hou for the second place. You guys make us proud!

Hence, we proudly ended the day with nine (9) awards back to college.

Crazy Week 2010

Since last 2 years, KBU has been organizing an orientation event for Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 students, which we named it as Crazy Week. How crazy it is? It is VERY crazy!!

The aims for the crazy week are to demonstrate the creativity in two and three-dimensional exploration, consideration of structure, construction, material and finishes, demonstrate critical awareness on global issues and sustainability and also demonstrate effective teamwork.

The theme for this year is BIOSPHERE. Biosphere simply means “life on Earth” that is of all living things on Earth. Students are to work within given groups to explore the terminology “Biosphere” in innovative ways using graphical presentation, installation and performance. What is so CRAZY about this Crazy week is that students are divided into 5 groups and are required to produce: Bunting design, montage design, short movie, commercial break, lighting design, installation design, furniture design and performance in 3 WEEKS time!

Warning: Try this only in KBU and DO NOT try this at Home!

The day has finally come for what students have been preparing for 3 hard weeks. It started off with a short briefing by Ms Atie in the KBU multi-purpose hall. After that, students were required to proceed to assembly the pre-fabricated installation, lighting and furniture design at the given site in one hour time.

Before we continued to the performance, we were proud to invite the panel of judges to join us this year: Mr Fahkul- International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Mr Chen- TS Exim Sdn Bhd, Representative Management Team- ELK Furniture Sdn Bhd.

Presentation like what we have been practicing throughout our learning process in KBU.

Genesis
The concept of showing a new beginning to a better world, it is hard to start over but the result is wonderful. It is an explosion of a new beginning. As what they quoted “Although it is not easy to start, it has a beautiful ending”.

H.E.A.L.E.R.S
The concept is based on a self sustainable system where neuron is the expressive element. They focus on the connection between green and man life.

Renergy

The concept is to highlight on the energy consumption. To save energy resources with 4 Rs-Reduce, Reuse, Reserve and Regenerate.

Asylum

We at Think-Lab, are proud to welcome you the opportunity to attend ThinkLab's December Design Conference. The list of speakers can be found in our flyer. We have a total of 7 speakers, including Serina Hijjas, daughter of Hijjas Kasturi and the Deputy Minister of Higher Education as well!

Titled: “The Local Design Culture”

In one morning we intend to explore design’s future cultural possibilities. This session is open to invited guests who participate as observers, with a Q&A session at the end of the Conference.

The Conference is targeted towards future young creative individuals, acting as agents of change and also working professionals that are open to new ideas and insights to respective industries. This title sets the context as a beginning for a new local thinking design culture that is currently making a huge impact across the globe.

Our AMAZING line up of speakers ranges from the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Serena Kasturi (Daughter of the well-known Hijaz Kasturi), Founder of Re-Cap.Org, Founder and Chairman of The Design Alliacne (tDA) and more.

Among the VIPs invited are the Ministry of Higher Education, Alliance Francaise, wRega, Goethe Institute and many others.

The admission fee for students is RM30, whilst working professionals is RM250.

We have allocated 30 exclusive seats for our 1st conference participants, while the rest are booked for institutes and corporates. And for the first time, 1st conference participants will be entitled to a 15% discount on the admission fee.

Institut Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia (IPDM) and the Malaysian Society of Interior Designers (MSID) are pleased to announce a competition to design the logo for the new Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID). IPDM and MSID members are invited to participate in this competition. The winning design will be used as the official logo for the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID).

What is the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID)
The Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) is the new professional institute for Interior Designers in Malaysia. IPDM and MSID have agreed to merge and to form the new institute.

Objectives

The objective of this competition is to create an internationally recognizable logo for the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID).
Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers or MIID are the keywords.
It must reflect the identity and role of the professional institute.
The logo must be simple to understand and recognize.
The logo must be easily identifiable and read in colour or in black & white.
The winning logo design is intended to be used as the official corporate logo for the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID.)

Rules and regulations

The competition is open to all IPDM and MSID members except the panel of juries.
There is no entry charge and limit to the number of entries for submission.
The logo design must be original and have not been previously published or used.
The logo design must be attractive and easily understood. All symbols used must be defined and must not exceed a maximum composition of theree (3) colours.
All entries must be submitted with a clear written rationale (max 50 words) of the logo on the submission form.
All entries must be submitted in soft copy in JPEG format of 600 dpi resolution and one sheet of a4 portrait sized hardcopy.
All contestants must include their personal details in the submission form attached and submitted together with the logo design. This submission form can be downloaded and printed.
All entries submitted would become the property of MIID who will have the right to use the submission in whole or in part or in any modified form for its purpose.

Jury

The jury shall comprise 5 members of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) Pro-Tem Committee.
The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entertained.
The winning result will be announced via email.

Winning prize
There will only be one winer with the winning prize of RM2000.

Changes and developments are the main elements towards solution for better living especially for us as designers contributing with various part of built environment.

We believe towards evolution, we need to have these 4 important elements to become today's generator of ideas:

Crazy Week: Jazz Up 2

College kicks start for another batch of newbie. Year 2 and 3 resume their life in college with a humongous project. A public art we need to design for given site. This project brings all IAD students from year 1, 2 & 3 together to make 5 different masterpieces that represent evolution. We have COTree, EMW³, D’spirit, Uunknown and Phalanx. Each of us is required to design a masterpiece that shows EVOLUTION.

Undergoing 3 weeks of intensive design and planning. The outcome of the each team is spectacular. Full submission of a life size model, sketch book that represent each group, a bunting to promote your work, and commercial break with a 5 minutes short movie. These submissions are coming in as a full package in this competition. Each team managed to pull out magnificent job during the final submission on 16th October 2009 (Friday) noon.

The ceremony starts at 2.30pm. Kick started with a welcoming speech by our beloved Ms.Atie. In a flash, we start watching the movie from different group. From group E to group A. after finishing the movie, we head to their site. And it started with Group Cotree and end with Group unknown. While the judges are doing their marking, the students have a little refreshment.

The winner design won by group A, EMW³. With the idea of, inner monster in our hearts. The design is mainly structured by using wire mesh and soft drink can. Their design gave people senses of space traveling as well shows a feeling of monster coming out from cage! In addition, their sketch book was brilliant as they contain it in a man made stone like box. They put in some dry ice to make the misty effect when the box is open. It’s one heck of idea to create scary mysterious feeling.

D'spirit of Evo

Then the 1st runner up is D’spirit. Their design idea is a dragon, inspired by our college’s logo. Their design are mainly structured by using wire mesh, wires, soft drink can and bottles. Their design is dominating their location with their outstanding design and shows the team perfect workmanship. In their movie, favorite character “Mushu” from a cartoon movie Mulan, was used to deliver the fierceness of dragon in a more funny way!

Last but not least, the 2nd runner up won by COtree. The design was inspired by roots from the tree that located at their site. The design is mainly structured with wire mesh and water bottles. Their work are more colourful then the rest as they used 3 different colour of plastic bag red, orange and yellow. To actually shows the evolutionary of mood. The structure is obviously shown and manages to create a shading device for that particular space. Come to their movie, their movie is the topic of the day cause of the special effects and outstanding storyline.

For the other 2 groups, their design didn’t get chosen but their creativity and efficiency of their team are definitely undeniable. Phalanx designs make people having a lot of thinking towards their design just to understand their concept. It’s very interesting that they convey messages to the public indirectly so people will takes time enjoy their design. On the other hand, we have unknown. Unknown design is like a time portal structured by wire mesh. But the exact function is a hang out place, where people can sit and hang out.

The Cra-zy week end with a beautiful closing ceremony, by giving prizes to the winners. As well giving away token of appreciation to the guest judge from Graphic Design School as well some sponsored outside the school. The event ends around 5++pm in a gently sunset of dawn.

What Design Means to All of Us in Times of Economic Crisis & Global Warming.

Think-lab acknowledges that the current global economic & environmental state of our time is in dire need of fresh new ideas for solutions. Social and political sectors could use a lot of fresh solutions, as the focus of think-lab’s first forum would be these two major global crisis.

The event titled, ‘WHAT DESIGN MEANS TO US IN TIMES OF ECONOMIC CRISIS & GLOBAL WARMING’ is one of our many conference series which opens up local design context globally. The aim of this mini conference is to create awareness and educate young future creative agents and professionals to be aware of the current global situation. This is very much aligned with our organization’s commitment as the ‘world’s leading design platform’.

Think-lab’s concern is the contribution of the global DESIGN industry as a paradigm for solutions linear to current issues. Think-lab is hosting its first series of many Mini Conferences with the itch to question the function and relation of recent design creations/efforts to being part of the solution.

2nd Nippon Paint Young Designer Award is back! Let’s showcase your design talents and creativity and get recognized by submitting your entries today for the Nippon Young Designer Award.

The Nippon Young Designer Award (NPYDA) is organized by Nippon Paint, and is established to give recognition to young, talented designers in Malaysia.
For 2009, the objective of this project is to test student’s skills in the application of colour trends; applying creativity into the projects; to elaborate on their selections; encourage young designers and to strengthen the international competitive edge of Malaysian original designs of “future designers”.

Theme and concept of NPYDA 2009

As an interior designer, colours are the magical tools in my designs that bring joy to my client’s life. The colour trend 2009 was announced last year and the forecast was done in consideration of a number of factors such as the environment, green issues, world economy and politics and such. For an average person, the matching of colours is not easy, let alone applying colours of the year into everyday’s living. The task for participating students for this year is to successfully integrate the use of the colour trends 2009 into their design entry.
The theme, “Leading Design with Colour Trends” carries the idea of integrating the colour trends announced by Nippon Paint 2008 for the 2009/2010 into the design work.
